Every Indian knows the anecdote in which Hanuman saved the Life of dying Lakshmana by bringing the colossal Medicine Mountain. The fabled mountain of Himalayas was augmented with medicinal herbs. It was an auspicious sanjeevni herb that brought back Lakshmana to Life. This is one of the miracles of Ayurveda.

Origins of Ayurveda

As per the history of Ayurveda, it has roots in India which eventually was evolved from oral tradition. The father of Ayurveda is known to be Dhanvantari, the Hindu Deity of medicines who received the knowledge from Brahma. The earliest traces can be found in Atharvaveda (c. 2nd-millennium BCE). Taking Vedas as a foundational source, later Ayurveda was explored to write medical texts and Ayurveda books.

“Ayurveda is not just about nutrition or herbology, it has a unique tool for diagnosis, diagnosis of understanding the human constitution is different from person to person. Each one has a unique metabolic system.”

- Maya Tiwari

What is Ayurveda?

Gregory P. Fields, in his book Religious Therapeutics: Body and Health in Yoga, Ayurveda, and Tantra apprises the readers that ‘Ayurveda’ is a Sanskrit word, and the Ayurveda meaning is the knowledge of Life and longevity.

In simple words, Ayurveda is:

  • Traditional Indian Medicine System
  • Science of Life with a philosophical and experimental basis
  • Holistic Approach to Healthcare and Medicine

The Indian Scholar under Google defines Ayurveda as a complete medical system that concerns the physical, psychological, philosophical, ethical, and spiritual health. The approach is to achieve health and wellness by balancing the mind, body, and spirit. The prime goal of Ayurveda is to promote good health.

Present Scenario of Ayurveda

Ayurveda teaches us to cherish our innate-nature – ‘to love and honor who we are,’ not as what people think or tell us, ‘who we should be.

-Prana Gogia

There are few systems from the ancient times that human beings still take into account. These are still developing in modern times and gaining the popularity of the masses. This is because it is benefitting humans to sought out their lives. Among these systems is of Ayurveda.

According to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality & Healing, more than 90% of the people in the Indian subcontinent congenitally reckon Ayurveda as a way to their medical treatment. As per WHO, presently, more than 70% of the world’s population relies on the nonconventional medicines having herbal sources to deal with their healthcare.

Though Ayurveda is gaining popularity globally, this is taken as an alternative approach for healthcare and wellness.

Ayurveda as an Alternative Option

In the present scenario, the need is leading us to make Ayurveda as an alternative option for the treatment. While undergoing allopathic treatment, there are several challenges that a patient has to face. These are side-effects of synthetic medicines, lack of curative therapy, the high price of the prescriptive medications, the emergence of new health issue etc.

Ayurvedic treatment is highly effective as compared to the allopathic, but the horizons of Ayurveda have not fully discovered due to the lack of advancements in the research methodology. Moreover, this is based on scientific knowledge. Scientifically, it is becoming challenging to accept Ayurveda while the western medicine system is advanced as its whole process is based on validated research and advanced techniques.

Essence of Ayurveda

It is essential to understand that as naïve, we are considering only particular aspects of Ayurveda as per our needs. In fact, we need to understand that Ayurveda is ‘Science of Life’ that acknowledges ‘how to live life?’ by touching different aspects to promote all over well being of the mind, body and soul.

“Life (ayu) is the combination (samyoga) of body, senses, mind and reincarnating soul. Ayurveda is the most sacred science of Life, beneficial to humans both in this world and the world beyond.”
